4th Fleet Facts:

·        Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Gary Roughead announced re-establishment of US. 4th Fleet, April 9.

·        U.S.   4th Fleet was a major U.S. Navy command in South Atlantic during World War II.

·        Established in 1943 to protect U.S. against raiders, blockade runners and enemy submarines

·        Disestablished in 1950 when responsibilities were taken over by U.S. 2nd Fleet.

·        New U.S. 4th Fleet headquarters will be in Mayport , Fla.

·        U.S. 4th Fleet commander will be dual-hatted with Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command (COMUSNAVSO).

·        COMUSNAVSO will retain mission as the Navy component commander for U.S. Southern Command.

·        U.S. 4th Fleet will be responsible for U.S. Navy ships, aircraft and submarines operating in the Caribbean, and Central and South America and surrounding waters

·        No new permanently-stationed vessels will be assigned to Mayport.

Mission Statement

Commander, U.S. FOURTH Fleet (COMFOURTHFLT) is the Numbered Fleet Commander assigned to U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command exercising operational control of assigned forces. COMFOURTHFLT conducts the full spectrum of Maritime Security Operations (MSO) in support of U.S objectives and security cooperation activities that promote coalition building and deter aggression. Acts in concert with other U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) components, coalition forces, and Joint Task Forces to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the USSOUTHCOM Area of Focus (AOF).
